Department Of Transportation News At many locations the Carrier has cut their forces well below what this General Committee considers adequate staffing levels.  As a consequence, both our members and the shippers are suffering.  Our members are either forced to work long hours with little rest or, if they have been among the unfortunate group to be furloughed, they can’t support their families at all.  The shippers likewise suffer for lack of adequate service because the Carrier may decide to skip a switch or two per week for lack of manpower (or because there simply aren’t enough cars generated to justify the switch).

If this concerns you as it does us, please notify unhappy shippers about their option to contact the Surface Transportation Board and register their complaints.  Find provided here a link to the Surface Transportation Board website section for shippers to report rail service related concerns.  An email link, form and toll-free number are provided for their convenience in contacting the STB.  The pertinent contact information is reproduced from the STB site below:

"Anyone with a rail service related concern may contact OPAGAC by filling out the easy-to-use Rail Customer and Public Assistance page with a complete description of their complaint. We may also be reached by calling our toll-free number (1-866-254-1792); by direct e-mail using railcustomerandpublicassistance@stb.dot.gov; or by fax at (202-245-0461). All inquiries received by OPAGAC through this program are handled directly with the involved railroad, usually within four hours of receipt."
